The objective was to collate a wide range of current, and often overlapping, documents and edit them into a concise and user-friendly handbook. An A6, loose-leaf format was developed that could be carried unobtrusively in an LGV driver's bag, and serve as a day-to-day source of reference to UK and EU legal requirements, company rules and important operating procedures. The loose-leaf format facilitates the updating and addition of material for the handbook, which is a focus for driver communications and a permanent place for drivers to make their own notes on key aspects of their particular routes and destinations.

Role
Working with the client's transport specialists, we produced illustrated drafts for discussion and approval.

Photography, graphics and tables were used to summarise and explain complex topics.

Development
A chapter structure was developed to integrate with a driver training programme that is being developed in parallel, using the same graphical style and common illustrations for PowerPoint presentations and documentation.

Delivery
Simplification of text to facilitate faster reading and enhance understanding, coupled with the adoption of an A6, 2-column page format has produced a pocket-sized publication that has met with driver approval and client cost advantages.
